Job description
What are you going to do at YoungOnes?
As a Senior Backend Developer you will be responsible for implementing new features for one of the two domains of the YoungOnes platform, namely: B2B or B2C. This platform is completely written in PHP (Symfony 7.1) and delivers a stateless REST API for our frontend teams. You will work closely with other experienced developers/colleagues from all disciplines (Frontend, UX/UI, QA, Product) as part of a multidisciplinary scrum team to iteratively improve and expand this product. You will share knowledge and spar with over 10 backend developers divided into multiple teams. Every month we have a Guild meeting with all the backend developers where we share knowledge, exciting new developments and tackle problems to make sure we’re all facing the same direction.
Backend development at YoungOnes is done Trunk Based so your commits will be directly done on our develop branch. Your work will be subject to code quality checks and tests in our extensive pipeline. This way we can embrace the CI/CD workflow that allows us to deploy new features and bugfixes to production quickly and safely. You closely monitor your work after a production deployment using the abundance of tools we provide to proactively step in when there are issues.
At YoungOnes, we have a hybrid work policy with an expectation to work from the office at least 2 days a week. We have a dedicated space for our entire Product Development Team with flex sit/standing desks equipped with dual monitors where we can work while enjoying some music. There is also plenty of room to sit as a pair when you are having a sparring session about a solution that you’ve come up with or that nasty bug you’re trying to fix. You will find a large TV on the main wall of our space that shows the monitoring tools to our entire team so we can guard the availability and quality of our platform.
What will your day look like?
Your day starts at the time that works best for you, but you are always expected to be present for the stand-up that occurs anywhere between 8:45 and 9:45 depending on the team you’re in. The daily stand-up is your place to let others know what you’ve been working on, issues that you’ve run into and help that you might need today. After the daily you will start working on tickets from the current sprint board. This can be done alone but we also encourage pair programming so colleagues can assess your creative solution and give you the opportunity to adopt any changes in an early stage of development. We strive for a fruitful work environment where you can learn a lot from the people around you and this works both ways of course. Around lunch time you can enjoy a fully catered lunch in the office or you can choose to join colleagues for a quick meal in the city centre of Breda at your own cost. There is often a group of people who also take a quick walk in the park after lunch.
Besides the every day tasks you’ll also take part in the bi-weekly sprint rituals:
Feature brainstorm
Refinement
Sprint Planning
Retrospective
Sprint Review
